SIPA 2011 insights: practical ideas for specialist publishers

The specialist publishing industry is in the midst of revolutionary change, with past publishing experience counting for far less in the digital future, according to speakers at SIPA’s annual UK congress on 13 July.  But there were plenty of inspiring ideas and practical advice from leaders of specialist media businesses.  SIPA is a US-based organisation, but with a growing membership in the UK and Europe.   There was a strong b2b focus, but plenty is applicable to niche consumer markets.  Here’s my take on the main themes, with some valuable advice for publishers migrating to digital: (more…)

Ten predictions for digital publishing for 2011

It’s been a helter skelter ride this year for publishers working out their digital strategy.  Apps have come from nowhere to a core part of the publishing toolkit in just a year.  Murdoch finally implemented his paywall and had some sort of success with it.  Digital editions are being reborn with the ipad and other tablets.  And social media has made editors think again about how they broadcast their content and manage contributions from their readers.  Joakim Ditlev of Zmags asked me to come up with some predictions for 2011; these are inevitably biased towards specialist publishers as my main constituency.  Be interesting to review them in twelve months time… (more…)

8 social media strategies for publishers

Rather than think of social media as a competitor, publishers of print and online content should consider this as a useful set of online tools to promote their content, stay in touch with customers and raise their profile online.  Here’s some practical ideas that pioneering publishers are already putting into practice, based on using social networks (Linked In, Twitter, Facebook), forums & Q&As and social content services (YouTube, slideshare, issuu…).  The full version of this article is to be published in the May/June edition of InPublishing, but here’s a taster of how social media can actually help your publishing business.
